"7 Simple Steps to Healthier Lips" or

"How to Get Away from the Dependency of Over-the-Counter Lip Products that Promise Soft Lips, But are Extremely Drying and are Chock-Full of Unhealthy Ingredients that You Ultimately Ingest."

Dear Beauty Maven,

Your lips and mouth are one of the most important parts of not only your face, but your body, as well. We place cosmetics on our lips to keep them well-moisturized and healthy. But, do you know the impact of placing not so healthy ingredients on your lips day-after-day? Are you aware of the amount of cosmetic lip ingredients you ingest in a lifetime?

Considering that we all probably eat pounds of lip care products within our lifetime, shouldn’t we be extremely conscious of what we’re placing on our lips and in our mouths? And, wouldn’t you like a natural approach to lip care that gets to the root of why your lips may be chapping, splitting, or peeling in the first place?

We’re here to provide you with a few, simple tips to keep your lips healthier, starting from the inside out, and without the addictive use of over-the-counter lip care products.

We’re talking about basic lip care here, not extra-fancy talk on lip plumping, cosmetic treatments, fillers, fine-line minimizing, medication side effects, or even cold sores. We’re going to cover basic lip care, or Lip Care 101, if you will.

As you probably already know, the lips do not have their own oil glands. So, they create very little of their own moisture. But, there are ways for you to keep your lips moist year round. Some of the culprits that can wreak havoc on our lips include harsh winter weather, the constant habit of lip-licking, and indoor air circulation (heat and air-conditioning). Exposing your lips to some of these elements can cause the little moisture that’s there to evaporate.

Other than avoiding licking your lips…

1} Drink and Be Merry. Lots of water, that is. Of course, this may be a bit obvious, but drinking lots of pure (as possible) water will not only help to keep you hydrated. It will also help with dry-mouth and chapped lips. Always start by hydrating internally. Also, avoid drinking chlorinated water because it is drying on the lips.

2} Protect Your Lips. There are plenty of products you can purchase that will help with moisturizing and protecting your lips. However, there are certain ingredients you should avoid when choosing what to place on your pucker. Petroleum (petrolatum)-based products, including mineral and salicylic acid should be avoided in your lip care. Petroleum-based products only coat your skin: they really don’t provide any extra moisture. Salicylic acid is an ingredient in one very well-known, over-the-counter lip care product line. Salicylic acid helps to exfoliate your skin, but is way too harsh to be used on the lips…it can irritate them even more. Exfoliating your lips is good. Exfoliating with salicylic acid…not so good. When looking at lists of lip care ingredients, always look for natural butters, oils, and other healthy ingredients.

3} Keep it Simple in the Sun. Although many manufacturers of skin and lip care products promote SPF in your lip care, I believe wearing a hat when being in the sun for extended periods of time is a better option than including lots of extra ingredients in your lip care. For example, titanium dioxide is a common ingredient in many lip care products and has sun protection benefits. However, the jury is still out on whether this product is really ok on your lips, so it probably isn’t ok for you to ingest.

4} Heat and Cold. Keep your environment temperatures as regulated as possible. In the summer, it may be easier to keep your lips moist. But, keep your lips covered as much as possible by wearing a hat when you’re outside for long periods of time. In the cooler months, internal heating systems can dry your lips (and, your skin overall) much faster. You may want to consider keeping a cool-mist nebulizer on the nightstand next to your bed to keep your immediate environment moist while you’re sleeping. You can also use a cool-mist humidifier at night.

5} Be Conscious of your Oral Care. Are you allergic to your toothpaste or mouthwash? Switch toothpaste and/or mouthwash brands for a few days to see if your chapped lips get better. Try a natural toothpaste or baking soda as an alternative. Also, rinse well after brushing. In addition, avoid saccharin, fluoride, sodium laureth (lauryl) sulfate, and alcohol in your toothpaste and mouthwash. And, rinsing with chlorinated and/or “hard” water strips moisture from your lips. Rinse with pure, filtered, or distilled water whenever possible.

6} Take Charge of your Natural Lip Care. If you’re interested in do-it-yourself lip care, think about pampering your pucker with these basic ingredient. You can place them neat (plain or without mixing with other ingredients) on your lips:

castor oil

cocoa butter

coconut oil

jojoba oil

manuka honey (used as a masque for your lips)

olive oil

shea butter

sweet almond oil

Also, avoid these common lip product ingredients:

petrolatum/petroleum jelly and mineral oil ~ which coat your lips, but do not moisturize them…at all!

silicone oil ~ which also coats, but doesn’t moisturize.

salicylic acid ~ which can be a good exfoliant for other parts of your body, but not your lips. Skip altogether!

menthol/camphor/phenol ~ which can provide a cooling sensation, but impart a lot of dryness.

some fragrances ~ which can be made with alcohol…which (of course you know) dries the lips!

7} Adopt a Simple Lip Care Routine. We suggest implementing a routine of mild exfoliation, steaming, wearing lipsticks and lip glosses only when you feel it’s absolutely necessary, and using lip conditioning protection. Lani B.’s The Lip System for Women, which includes The Lip Exfoliant and The Lip Conditioner, is a great asset in a natural lip care routine.
